Today Dr. VanNostrand and Dr. Darren Smith carry it on at 21 Northbrook Drive. Complete dental care, with a gentle touch.
Meet our doctors
One came from Long Island by way of seven years in Connecticut. The other grew up in Scarborough and stayed to be close to family and part of the community he grew up in. Patients know them as Dr. Van and Dr. Smith.
From Long Island, New York. Anthropology at SUNY Stony Brook, dentistry at Temple, then a residency at the UConn Health Science Center. Practising since 1997, and a member of the Spear Study Club. An avid mountain biker and trivia enthusiast, he lives in Freeport with his wife, Camilla, and his son, Wil.

From Scarborough, Maine. Biology at Hobart College, then Tufts, then a residency at Community Dental in Portland, Biddeford and Lewiston with Tufts and Maine Medical Center. He stayed in Maine to be close to family and part of the community he grew up in. He lives in Saco with his dog, Tess, and skis, kayaks, hikes and bikes.

New patients
Educating patients about their own dental health is part of how we work. Here is what to expect, from the first appointment on.
Before you come: ask your last dentist to email us bitewing x-rays from the past 2 years, a full series from the past 3, and a panorex from the past 5.
Your hygienist reviews your history, works out what you need and completes your cleaning. Then you meet one of the doctors for your exam, who goes through your records and the hygienist’s findings with you.
Some children need a little more time to be comfortable, and that is fine.
The typical first visit is at age 3, sooner if you notice a concern. Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth, so they are worth looking after, and a mouthguard is strongly recommended for any contact sport.
Implants are placed by the team of oral surgeons we work with.
We coordinate the appointments with them to make sure of the best outcome. Once the surgeon has finished, you come back here and we make your new crown, with a temporary tooth in between if the implant is in your smile line.

Routine cleanings are the key to a healthy mouth, and how often you come is based on your own needs. Your hygienist helps with home care too, including herbal and baking soda products.

Misaligned teeth can lead to gum recession and fractured teeth. We scan your mouth, and the scan shows what the final result can look like before you start.
A conservative way to change how otherwise healthy teeth look, in ceramic or resin composite, planned with a 3D scan and a computer-generated model.
KöR trays seal saliva out, so the gel stays active for 6 to 10 hours rather than the 25 to 35 minutes of a conventional tray.

We file your insurance claim on your behalf. We are non-participating and out of network with all plans, so we ask for payment in full at the time of service and your insurer reimburses you directly, based on your plan.

It usually takes about 90 minutes. Your hygienist reviews your history, works out what you need and completes your cleaning, and can answer any questions. Then one of the doctors does your exam, reviewing your records and the hygienist's findings to see whether any treatment is needed.

No. When carbamide peroxide, the active whitening agent, contacts water, hydrogen peroxide is released, which whitens the teeth. Bleaching does not soften, demineralize or weaken them.
Call the office. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and rinse it. If you can, put it back in the socket; if not, keep it in milk, and get here quickly and safely. If it is a baby tooth, do not put it back in the socket.
Yes. Implants can support permanently cemented bridges, which removes the need for a denture and feels closer to real teeth. The cost tends to be greater, and not everyone is a candidate, so ask us.
